An extraordinary number of guitarists have passed through San Juan Del Sur this month. Sonja from Switzerland had a good melodic tone - and Aaron from the States can string together some pretty mean riffs on his left handed guitar - he's not bad on a normal guitar, either. I stare at his backwards guitar and my fingers get all twisted up, I have no idea how he switches between them.
Caleb has a rock and roll band back in Canada, and brought down a mac with garageband on it to work on some new material.
My favorite singer of all the musicians that have visited, Marlys (pictured), had the body of an amazon (she's 6 foot 1) and the voice of an angel. She'd "shmoosh" together songs like "Sexual Healing" and "No woman no cry" and really make them work. Here's a couple recordings of her teaching me to play a couple songs. (I think this is the first time I've published me on bass) Marlys came to SJDS for a two week stay which turned into two months.
It's too bad I didn't have a recorder (it got stolen, sigh) to capture the last jam we had. After most of a month playing together everybody had got pretty good, and there was some ferociously good jamming between her, me, Caleb, Sonya and Aaron at the party last Sunday. It's just Aaron and Caleb and I now - and Aaron leaves next week - but two new guitarists and a drummer just showed up, we jam tomorrow night for the first time.
I gotta get an amp.
